To Do List Loves… UnderConstruction @ Hot August Fringe
UnderConstruction @ Hot August Fringe
@ The Royal Vauxhall Tavern – Hot August Fringe runs until 26th August
“an amazing experience…we loved every minute!”
The RVT’s Hot August Fringe is well under way now, and last night saw the first appearance at South London’s finest cabaret space/boozer of Rude Grrl’s UnderConstruction (featured in our August To Do List).
They say: “UnderConstruction is a highly-acclaimed and hugely popular alternative performance platform for new work. Curated by Lisa Lee, this experimental forum has been running since 2007.”
“Often raw, always fascinating, UnderConstruction has proven to be a who’s who of the cream of the scene and continues to be a breeding ground for next year’s must-see performers.”
(Time Out – Critic’s Choice)
Previously, UnderConstruction has featured many of Loserville’s favourite artists, including Jonny Woo (he of Gay Bingo fame), The Lipsinkers, Scottee, Bourgeois & Maurice, Le Gateau Chocolat (one of our not-to-be-missed tips at the Edinburgh Festival), La JohnJoseph and many more…

We say: Last nights line up, selected especially for the Hot August Fringe, included: Mr Teds, Blanche DuBois, Lazlo Pearlman, Willis, Blue Verse, Marcus Reeves, Sasha Selavie, Natalie Geographic, Helen Noir & Darrell Berry, and Myra Dubois. We loved them all, but we’ve picked out three of our favourites:
Myra Dubois kicked things off with a preview of her forthcoming one woman show, “From Rotherham With Love” (see August To Do List). We love Myra’s dry wit and inimitable style, and her shameless use of pantomime tactics to make the audience feel instantly comfortable and ready to laugh. The opening act is always a tough slot to fill, but Myra was never going to let the side down. Her fabulous dance routine had us dancing along in our seats, and this taster was enough to get us very excited about the full show coming later in the month…
Marcus Reeves previewed his new show “Masquerade Macabre” with a selection of songs from his forthcoming solo album, “Quicksilver”. Mixing his roots as a singer songwriter with influences from musical theatre, pop, rock and dance music, Marcus has recently found his true voice with his own brand of ‘twisted rock cabaret’. Mixing hauntingly beautiful songs with impressive use of the video screen, and bucket-loads of charisma, Reeves’ 15 minutes on stage was a real triumph. No doubt, the full show at The Battersea Barge later in August will be an amazing experience!

Blanche DuBois will be appearing later in the Hot August Fringe as part of The LipSinkers, but put on an amazing solo performance for UnderConstruction. The outfits! The hats! The voice! We loved every minute of Blanche’s Scenes From a Soap Opera – Eastenders it aint (and thank f*@k for that!)

I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like: nice pubs, film marathons, not doing real marathons, bad comedy, plays/musicals with shorter second halves, and the Oxford comma.
