[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
In April 2014, To Do List decamped to New York for an action-packed week of great theatre, cabaret, boozing, eating and wandering around!
Now that we’re back home, we’ve put together a SPECIAL list of THINGS TO DO IN NEW YORK – so if you’re heading to the Big Apple, this list should keep you pretty damn happy…

Hedwig & The Angry Inch | Belasco Theatre | Booking Until October 2015 | $49-$150
The cult classic hits Broadway for the first time, with Neil Patrick Harris transforming into the titular Hedwig. A genuine tour-de-force – we loved every minute, from Hedwig’s arrival on a wire, through a miraculous costume change in a car, to an uplifting, life-affirming finale.
If you liked the film, you’ll LOVE Hedwig on Broadway!

Kinky Boots | The Al Hirschfeld Theatre | Booking Until January 2016 | $79-$177
The Northampton accents might be a little askew, but everything else about this hit Broadway musical is spot on! Great songs from Cyndi Lauper, a funny and imaginative story from the mind of Harvey Fierstein, and a dazzlingly brilliant lead performance from Billy Porter as Lola, the designer of those Kinky Boots!

5 Napkin Burger | Hell’s Kitchen, Union Square & Upper West Side
Legend has it that you’ll need five napkins to cope with one of these tasty burgers. We managed to cope with just the one, but that’s not a criticism – meaty, well cooked burgers the size of your fist loaded with tasty toppings in a perfect bun. The onion rings were pretty ace too!
Keep an eye out for cheap sliders in the bar during happy hour!

Beer Culture | 328 West 45th Street
Just along the road from the Al Hirschfield Theatre, we popped into Beer Culture for a perfect pint before Kinky Boots. A great atmosphere with, surprisingly for the location, what felt like a very local crowd. A massive selection of local and international beers, and you can buy bottles to take away with you too…

Canteen 82 | 467 Columbus Avenue
If you’re in the area, perhaps visiting the Museum of Natural History, this Chinese restaurant is definitely the place to head for lunch. The special lunch menu is a bargain, and there is lots to choose from. The fried dumplings are huge and incredibly tasty, and the noodle dishes tasted super fresh.

Cho Dang Gol | 55 West 35th Street
A short hop, skip and jump from Macy’s on Herald Square, this Korean restaurant serves an impressive selection of authentic dishes. The squid fried noodles were to die for, and contained an ocean’s worth of squid! The potato pancakes were ace too, and the large portion of steamed dumplings could have fed an army![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
The City Reliquary Museum | 370 Metropolitan Avenue
A real curiosity in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – a not-for-profit community museum which displays New York City artifacts and oddities and hosts block parties, backyard concerts, and film events.

Museum of the Moving Image | 36-01 35th Avenue (at 37th Street)
A really well curated museum, with some great movie stills and props, fun interactive exhibits (such as an opportunity to make your own stop-motion animation), and classic film clips. Oh, and a wall of tumblr-famous GIFs on arrival will leave only the emotionally vacant unamused.

Nita Nita | 146 Wythe Avenue
A dark, sexy, ‘local’ bar in Williamsburg, serving a nifty selection of American and International draught lagers and playing some great music. The food menu looked pretty tasty too, although we headed down the road to Zenkichi. We’ll definitely be back here next time to try the grub!

The Slipper Room | 167 Orchard Street
This is the kind of cabaret bar we want to run – just the right size, with a mix of table seating and standing room, and even a surprise balcony level. The Friday night show was pretty ace, with a mix of burlesque, boylesque, risqué comedy, circus, acrobatics and the dreaded performance art! A great night out.

Soho Grand Hotel Bar | 310 West Broadway
Spend a swanky evening sipping cocktails in this lush bar at the classy Soho Grand Hotel. We can recommend the Manhattans (obv) and the High Towers, but to be honest, we wanted to drink everything on the cocktail list (and gave it a good go!).
Keep an eye out for special events in the Club Room – we popped in to catch Amanda Lepore and Joey Arias doing their thang…

Spritzenhaus | 33 Nassau Avenue
After an afternoon walking the streets of Williamsburg, settle in at this large but atmospheric beer-hall style bar for a Köstritzer Schwarzbier or seven, or work your way through the extensive drinks menu (seasonal specials and cocktails are TOO tempting).
Oh, and they serve hotdogs. MIGHTY FINE HOTDOGS. With all the trimmings.

Vynl | 754 9th Avenue (at 51st Street)
Ease yourself into the morning (or afternoon) after the night before at this Hell’s Kitchen posh-diner – home to potent Flimsy Mimsy’s and Bloody Mary’s, not too mention mean brunches: we recommend the Huevos Antonio and Elvis’s Revenge…

Zenkichi | 77 North 6th Street
The best food of our NYC 2014 trip was at this great little Japanese restaurant in Williamsburg. Settle into to what feels like your own private hideaway table, and feast on a tapas-style menu of amazing food: the Filet Mignon Tataki, Potato Mochi, Grilled Nasu Dengaku, Tsukune Chicken, Vegetable Tempura and Popcorn Shrimp were out-of-this-world good!

I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like: nice pubs, film marathons, not doing real marathons, bad comedy, plays/musicals with shorter second halves, and the Oxford comma.
