
The Rest is Noise This Weekend – Free Events at Southbank Centre
An amazing array of free events are coming this weekend at the Southbank Centre entitled ‘Here Comes the 20th Century’. This is the first big weekend in a very special year-long festival inspired by Alex Ross’ book The Rest Is Noise. The festival infuses film, debate, talks and a vast range of concerts to reveal the fascinating stories behind the century’s wonderful and often controversial music.

Saturday
Ida Barr’s Music Hall Club Night | The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall, 9.30pm
Christopher Green, in his guise as pensioner rapper Ida Barr, celebrates the glory of early 20th-Century music hall with a special club night.
Sunday
Breakfast with Schoenberg | The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall, 10.15am
Grab a coffee and delve inside the workings of a key piece, Schoenberg’s String Quartet No.2 at this fun and informal session lead by animateur Fraser Trainer.
Death In Venice | The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall, 8pm.
A screening of Luchino Visconti’s masterful film adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novel about an ageing composer’s fatal retreat to Venice and his obsession with the los beauty of youth.
