September To Do List
So, we’re swanning around California, singing that pesky song from The O.C., but a little part of us is thinking: “If we were in London right now, what would we be planning for September?”
And here’s the answer.
Late Cinema: The Warriors @ Gate Cinema | 1 September | 23:15 | £8.50
Late night film screening of this cult favourite – dress up in fancy dress, you might win a prize.
The Elephant & The Nun Festival | 1-2 September | Free
Local festival celebrating the heart of Southwark, which apparently stretches all the way from Elephant & Castle to Nunhead. Includes lightning.
Liberty Festival | 1-3 September | Free
Our highlights at this great festival, which features work by leading deaf and disabled artists, include:
- Sputnik – Fittings Multimedia Arts (UK) 1 September | 2pm – 2.20pm, 4.30pm – 4.50pm
An other-worldly installation that comes alive as a young woman seeks to live away from the earth in a mind-boggling structure that fuses her body and spirit with a machine. - Tracking – StopGAP Dance Theatre (UK) 1 September | 2.30pm – 2.50pm, 5pm – 5.20pm
An eccentric explosion of dance as these dynamic dancers mix 70s kitsch, Cluedo and vintage Britishness to an exhilarating soundtrack from talented Brighton bands. - Spatial Delivery – Bill Shannon (USA) 1 September | 3pm – 3.20pm, 5.30pm – 5.50pm
Shannon’s pioneering movement technique on crutches is at the cutting edge of contemporary street dance and skating; his journey continues with his ever-developing vision which pushes the boundaries of current choreography.

Two days of carnival, spectacle, music, dance, circus, singing… and fireworks.
Norwegian Wings Over North Weald @ Epping Ongar Railway | 9 September | £15.50-18
A special day in celebration and remembrance of the Norwegian aircrews who defended London during the Battle of Britain. The EOR heritage bus and rail network will be linking up Epping Underground station, Epping High Street, Ongar and the airfield, and you can travel as the airmen did in 1940s style.
Victoria Melody: Northern Soul @ Soho Theatre | 11 – 15 September | 21:15 | £10-12.50
A bit about Northern Soul, a bit about pigeons. Right up pur street then. In the words of Soho Theatre, “Northern Soul is a hilarious one-woman show about Victoria’s attempts at joining in.”
Richard DeDomenici: Popaganda @ Toynbee Studios | 14 September | 19:30 | £5
“Sit back and relax to the dulcet tones of Richard DeDomenici as he ham-fistedly attempts to destabilise global cultural hegemonies with a series of stupid audiovisual gags, songs that aren’t real, facts that aren’t funny, and jokes that don’t rhyme, in his new show Popaganda. ”
Hide & Seek Weekender @ Southbank Centre | 14-16 September | Free
A free festival of games and play? On the South Bank? What’s not to like. Especially excited about StampCollective’s game ‘Trump Or False‘ – a game of persuasion, deception, tactics and risk – which runs from 6.30 – 10pm on Friday 14th.
Big Hits @ Soho Theatre | 18 – 22 September | 21:00 | £10
“Big Hits rises up in the space between live art and theatre, looking for a good time – and staring hard at censorship, propriety, and the violence that can erupt when noise is stifled. An Unruly Voice is at large, the music’s turned up high.”
Big Gay 10k | 30 September | For Charity Darling!
An all new LGBT fundraising event, a sponsored walk around London’s must-see sights – starting and finishing at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.

I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like free, cheap & offbeat London, especially: cabaret, art, theatre, pop-ups, eating out, quirky films, museums, day trips, social enterprise & much more.
