Review: Short Com – The Superbly Curated Comedy Film & Animation Festival
Short Com | Rich Mix | September 2024
Rich Mix, the vibrant cultural hub in East London, recently played host to a delightful showcase of comedic talent with the Short Com Film and Animation Festival. The event, which ran over a weekend, offered a refreshing mix of emerging and established filmmakers, each bringing their unique brand of humor to the big screen. The festival has been running since 2011, providing a dedicated platform for creators in short form comedies to showcase their work to a curious audience. With huge excitement, I made it a point to attend no matter what – and it turned out to be exactly what I was joyfully hoping it to be.
The festival’s curation deserves praise for its diversity, featuring everything from slapstick to dark comedy, presenting filmmakers from various backgrounds and perspectives ensuring there was something for every taste. This diversity was reflected in the content, resulting in a rich tapestry of comedic voices that kept the audience on their toes. Standout entries included Collection Only (trailer below), Nun Slayer, Wet Fish, Terminally Ill (main picture, above), ILY, BYE and many more.
The technical quality of the films varied, as happens with the genre of short films, but the creativity on display was consistently impressive. Many films demonstrated just how much can be achieved on a shoestring budget with a good script and sharp editing.
The intimate setting of Rich Mix’s cinema enhanced the communal experience, with audience laughter creating a warm, convivial atmosphere. The curator Chris personally managed the running of three screenings and conducted brilliant Q&A sessions with filmmakers after each session, adding valuable context and insights into the creative process.
While not every short film hit the mark, the rapid-fire format meant that a new chuckle was always just minutes away. Short Com proved that when it comes to comedy, sometimes less is indeed more. I see no reason that this festival can’t grow bigger and better and draw more audience and attention in future.
