Bonkers, blood-splattered rock odyssey!
We had a few WTF moments in the first 10 minutes of Lizzie, the new rock musical about fabled axe-murderer Lizzie Borden. However, the head-splitting, throbbing bass and guitar-led score shook us up and encouraged us to let go of our inhibitions! This is 90 minutes of delightfully over-the-top, drooling poodle rock!
The story is refreshingly easy to follow with Lizzie counting on her nurse-maid, sister and lesbian lover to commit parricide on her abusive father and stepmother. The first half is a tense build up to the murderous act itself – leading to a shocking and unexpectedly blood splattered finale.
The lighting and set were a mindf*ck, with strobe, blinders, smoke and special effects all fusing into an overwhelming visual feast.
The cast of four incredibly talented international female vocalists blew the roof off Greenwich Theatre. Our highlight was the divine blue haired rock goddess Eden Espinosa, who stole the show with her hilarious song ‘What the Fuck Lizzie?’.
If you’re looking for sanity or nuance, this show might not be right for you. But if you want a fabulous night out with some of the world’s best vocal belting-it-out performances, then Lizzie is most certainly calling you.
P.S. We wrote our Batshit Crazy London post before seeing this. But we don’t think anything in that post was as batshit crazy as this musical!
