Dina Martina is the perfect antidote to the sanitised pop-princess version of drag pushed by RuPaul’s Drag Race. Bad singing, hilarious mispronunciation and stories that go on and on a plenty, but the ultimate sting in the tail always leaves the audience spluttering uncontrollably.
Dina is larger than life and odd, but makes you feel at home without the usual painful drag audience interaction. It’s a warm but wry night of perfect comedy timing and outré avant garde drag in a perfect kitsch and classic wrapping.
Dina’s version of Wichita Lineman deserves its place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It is truly hilarious and touchingly if not magnificently awful. Don’t miss this new show for this alone as well as divine comedy you won’t be expecting.
Sadly Soho Theatre Dean Street still doesn’t understand their subterranean, ex-Indian restaurant, cabaret space. With rude staff, no table service, and a strange one way system through a fire escape; luxe it ain’t. Gender neutral toilets should not include urinals. For anyone who’s been attacked in one will attest these are still male only spaces. They need to visit Chamäleon in Berlin or The Slipper Room in New York to create a space deserving of Dina.
Dina Martina’s new show is unmissable. Full of joy, WTF and commitment to being different.
