1. Lucha Libre Photography Exhibition | Free
Be sure to catch photographer Lourdes Grobet’s Lucha Libre project, which charts the Mexican wrestling phenomenon fromthe 1980’s as an important part of Mexican popular culture.
2. Amandititita | Friday 17th August from 12 midnight, DJs before | Free
Amandititita is a polemical and controversial singer-songwriter from Mexico. Her lyrics are characterized as urban chronic, ironic and with an ingenious language.
3. The Gentleman, the Mermaid, Mexican Cinema, Lottery! (“El Catrin, La Sirena, Mexican Cinema, Loteria!) by Tupac Martir | Free
For London MexFest, Tupac Martir will create a projection on the facade of the Rich Mix building. In addition, Mexican instrumental band Austin TV is composing two songs which will be available for audiences to download and listen to through headphones as they view projections, generating a conversation between spectator and video and creating a personal experience within the public space.
4. The Films of course! | £7 adult, £5 student or concs / Day pass £15
There is a huge programme of the creme de la creme of Mexican film. We recommend downloading the full brochure and having a good read.
However, these films stood out for us:
Scifi Classics from Mexico | All 3 days of the festival
With brilliantly kitsch titles such as ‘The Aztec Mummy vs The Human Robot’, ‘Planet of the Female Invaders’, ‘Santo vs. the Martian Invasion’ & ‘The Ship of Monsters’, this Mexican sci fi retrospective promises to be the highlight of MexFest. Whether it’s joining silver-masked wrestler Santo fighting martians, or making a low-rent robot in order to steal an ancient treasure, these films are bound to be hilarious, silver clad and sexy.
Deficit (Dir. Gael Garcia Bernal, 2007) | Sunday 19th August at 6.30pm
We loved Gael Garcia Bernal in Bad Education and the Motorcycle Diaries, but lets see if any Almodovar rubbed off on him as he directs ‘Deficit’. The films gives us a glimpse of a day in the life of Cristobal, a Mexican high-class snob.
Short Films Programme One, Documentary & Fiction (Various) | Friday 17th August at 1pm
A smorgasbord of Mexican fact and fiction is available in this shorts session, including ‘The Goldmine’ (La Mina de Oro), where 50-something Betina finds love over the internet
Short Films Programme Two, Animation (Various) | Friday 17th August at 1pm
We love animation and are obsessed with Mexican illustrator Jose Posada, whose Day of the Dead engravings are world-famous. In ‘Give Me Posada’, Cecilio Vargas Torres’ Posada is haunted by his prints coming to life.
