Interview: Pink Lotus on Edinburgh Fringe show Hot Queer Magic
HOT QUEER MAGIC | Hill Street Theatre | 16-27 August 2023 | £15
As Pink Lotus brings her LGBTQ+ cabaret spectacular HOT QUEER MAGIC to the Edinburgh Fringe, we caught up with the queer burlesque artist and Indian dancer to talk about the show, influences, and Things To Do (in London)…
Tell us about LGBTQ+ cabaret Hot Queer Magic, and what we can expect at this fringe edition…
HOT QUEER MAGIC is exactly what it says on the tin – a big joyous party, celebrating queerness in all its forms with some of my favourite people. For our run at the Fringe, I’ll be joined by some of the most incredible, ingenious, political, raucous, and sexy af cabaret acts around. We’ve got drag, character comedy, burlesque, Bollywood, and acts that just refused to be categorised. HOT QUEER MAGIC is a consistent sell-out in South London, and I always leave it filled with an incredible amount of love for my queer family everywhere.

What are your influences, for your own work and for the vibe of Hot Queer Magic?
The vibe? HUGE! My influences? Pre-colonial Indian courtesans, dancing as a form of worship before they were banned by the British. And also being gay.
What are your favourite things about being at the fringe?
It’s incredible to fill your whole life up with art, even if it’s just for a day. When I’m here, nothing matters except comedy, theatre, dance, music, poetry. It cleanses my soul.
When you’re back in London, what are your favourite haunts?
Definitely The Ivy House in Peckham. It’s such an important community space, and I’ve been missing it since I got sent loads of videos of the celebrations when they screened the most recent England World Cup game. The atmosphere looked incredible.
HOT QUEER MAGIC runs until 27th August at the Hill Street Theatre in Edinburgh, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe 2023. Book Tickets Here.

I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like: nice pubs, film marathons, not doing real marathons, bad comedy, plays/musicals with shorter second halves, and the Oxford comma.
