Wilton’s Music Hall is the perfect venue for this barnstorming romp, an all-male production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore from director Sasha Regan.
A hugely talented cast take on the story of captain’s daughter Josephine and her love for lower class sailor Ralph Rackstraw – much to the dismay of her father, who intends for her to marry the more socially appropriate Sir Joseph Porter.
Sam Kipling is a mesmerising Josephine, hitting notes that defy belief, while Danny Becker plays it straight as the hunky Ralph. The scene stealers, though, are Juan Jackson as the supremely athletic Captain Corcoran, David McKechnie as the slimy Sir Joseph, and Scott Armstrong as sweet Miss Buttercup.
This is a really enchanting production, which quickly surpasses its high concept billing to thrive as a supremely entertaining and engaging ship-based musical farce. The performances are truly impressive – to a man, the entire cast excels – and Ryan Dawson Laight’s design is a triumph of imaginative simplicity. An all-round hit!
