Elf Lyons is The Woman on the Edge at Edinburgh Fringe 2026 ★★★★★
★★★★★ Elf Lyons is The Woman on the Edge | Pleasance Courtyard
It is unfathomable that this show is not nominated for – let alone winning – the Edinburgh Comedy Award. Perhaps this standout comedy show of the Fringe proves just how out of touch that institution is.
Seriously, if the inspirational combination of Apollo 13 and Pagliacci performed by a Golden-Age-of-Hollywood star doesn’t tick every possible box, what can? And actually properly seriously, this is a transcendent, genre-defying hour of theatrical comedy which both deserves every award going and deserves to fly free of all that PR bullshit.
Is Elf Lyons The Woman on the Edge? She’s not here, actually – instead, filling in for Elf is a bewigged Norma Desmond type who, between banana phone calls to her husband, relates the inspirational story of Apollo 13 and the very personal story of Lyons’ relationship breakdown and ensuing Thailand tryst with a bald-headed clown. If that all sounds a bit much, forget everything you just read and go with it – subtext and all!
Lyons has always been an innovator – we were wowed by her exhaustingly funny 2017 show Swan, and nearly ten years on The Woman on the Edge feels like a defining career point. The concept, the commitment, the bravery – not to mention the lip-syncing and the unimpeachable mangled accents – are just comedy at its peak.
There’s some sensitively handled audience participation, great prop work, and an emotional climax, which is uplifting, empowering and euphoric. It’s hard to remember a more instant standing ovation, nor a more rewarding one, and as a visibly moved Lyons leaves the stage at the end of this wondrous show, it’s hard to think that any comedy performance could possibly top this at the 2026 Fringe. If they do, they’ve transcended greatness.
| Access Score ♿♿♿(3/5) 🚧Access notes – A locked lift is available – contact venue in advance. Pleasance Courtyard is cobbled, and can be very busy. ❄️Heat: Comfortable. 💺Seat – Stadium-style raked seating – some restricted views likely due to railing. Comfortable enough for a one hour show. |
I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like: nice pubs, film marathons, not doing real marathons, bad comedy, plays/musicals with shorter second halves, and the Oxford comma.
