The Maids

To Do List Daily: The Maids – Wed 2 Mar

Uzo Aduba (Orange Is The New Black) & Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat) take centre stage in The Maids, Jean Genet’s intense play about servants role-playing the murder of their overbearing mistress.

The Maids

It’s not laugh-a-minute (although there are moments of dark humour), and it’s not one to take your granny to (unless she swears like a trooper), but as an opportunity to see two of the hottest acting talents of the moment live and in the flesh, The Maids makes for an entertaining (if challenging) night at the theatre.

Uzo Aduba – Crazy Eyes herself – and Not Safe For Work’s Zawe Ashton chew up the non-existent scenery in this melodramatic vision of sadomasochistic role-play and upstairs versus downstairs class warfare. There’s a lot going on, even when there’s little to see besides housemaid sisters Solange and Claire dressing up in their Mistresses finest dresses and acting out violent fantasies of murder and revenge. The staging is as simple as can be – a plain rectangular stage, plain that is but for thousands of flower petals – and the pace unremitting.

Don’t go for a relaxing night out. Do go to see some of your favourite actresses doing what they do best, live on stage, and prepare for some lively debate over your post-show dinner!
