★★★★★ A Simple Space at Underbelly Festival Southbank
Five years since we were first amazed by this cheeky, sexy and jaw-dropping spectacle from Gravity & Other Myths, a new cast delivers all the same thrills!
A Simple Space remains a deceptively simple show – the lithe, enthusiastic performers gently probe their physical limits through a series of athletic ‘games’ and play sessions, showing off skill, agility and strength with an intoxicating insouciance.
The live percussion remains a key ingredient in this alluring show, lending a sense of something approaching urgency but never overpowering the acrobatic endeavours or the performers’ personalities.
If anything, this new troupe seem even more assured than their predecessors, though every successful tumble, throw, climb and leap still feels dangerous (in a good way).
It’s not so common that a circus show manages to be genuinely warmhearted, funny, and gasp-inducing all in one 60-minute set – but A Simple Space is one of those rare shows which pulls off everything it tries.
I am Joint Editor at To Do List. I like: nice pubs, film marathons, not doing real marathons, bad comedy, plays/musicals with shorter second halves, and the Oxford comma.
